Sensor Signal Conditioner Basics


Sensing elements (transmitters) convert useful physical signals into electrical signals, such as: piezoresistive bridges for measuring pressure, piezoelectric sensors for detecting ultrasonic waves, and electrochemical cells for measuring gas concentrations, etc. The electrical signals generated by the sensing elements are small and non-ideal, such as temperature drift and nonlinear transfer functions.



A sensor analog front end (eg Texas Instruments LMP91000) and sensor signal conditioners (eg Texas Instruments PGA400/450) are used to amplify the small signals generated by these sensing elements to usable levels. The PGA400/450 contains a complete signal conditioning circuit, as well as some circuits that stimulate the sensing element, manage power, and interface with an external controller. In addition, devices such as the PGA400 are capable of calibrating for the non-idealities of these sensing elements.
